Submitted by admin on Thu, 2007-12-13 20:55. Hunting | Outdoor Survival Articles | Winter SportsWhen the winter season starts nothing is more valuable to avid outdoorsman than quality pair of boots. As easy as finding a pair of boots sounds buying the right pair for your respective needs can sometimes prove to be a difficult task. Cabela’s Snowy Range 1200 boots are the ideal footwear for any serious sportsman looking to spend long hours either on the ice fishing or in a tree stand hunting.
First and foremost the Snowy Range series of Boots offer outdoorsman extreme warmth. With 1200 grams of Thinsulate™ insulation packed into their quality construction you can bet these boots will keep you feet warm in any conditions. We all know that choosing a weight of insulation for your boots should be based on your anticipated level of activity and the conditions. As you probably already figured out these boots are made for very cold temperatures where you are not doing much moving around. Ice fishing, deer hunting and snowmobiling are all activities where the Snowy Range 1200 Boots will make your life outdoors much more comfortable.
The combination of Thinsulate™ insulation and a Dry-Plus® membrane; provides an exceptional warmth barrier that still allows for ventilation while sealing out moisture from rain, snow and standing water. Having a pair of boots that are not watertight just doesn’t cut it. For winter conditions where snow, sleet or slush can be present you need the certainty of a pair of boots that are completely waterproof. Not only are Cabela’s Snowy Range 100 percent waterproof but they also have high 10-inch sides to the boot that allow you to wade across skinny streams or any flowing water you may encounter. This exceptional boot height also provides great support to your ankles in slippery conditions where one could potentially turn an ankle. Additionally the rubber bottoms of the Snowy Range boots provide the perfect balance of tough traction and support needed for walking on icy lakes or snowy hills.
After the several test trials these boots went through there is no doubt that they have been built to withstand hundreds of miles through punishing conditions while showing little wear. The EVA side panels and rubber toe and heel guards, play a big part in minimizing scraps and punctures that can occur in these harsh winter conditions. The quick lace ring system makes putting on or taking off your Snowy range boots a breeze while also providing enough leverage to snug your boots as tight as you like them.
If you're searching the market for a new pair of insulated and waterproof winter boots for the upcoming season, it would be difficult to find a pair better than Cabela’s Snowy Range 1200 Boots. The bottom line, these boots are made from excellent materials with quality construction that will keep you feet warm and comfortable for years to come.

Try winter camping in a yurt
Submitted by admin on Mon, 2006-11-06 19:19. Winter SportsPublished on: 11/05/06
Winter is on its way, but that doesn't mean the camping trips have to end — if you switch from a tent to a yurt.
A yurt is a circular tentlike structure with a wood frame, a fabric cover that won't collapse under snow and a door.
Pacific Yurts (Yurts.com) has a list of state and private parks -- from New York to California and Canada to Mexico -- where you can rent a yurt.
There are yurts aplenty for rent, and you can use the Internet to plan your outing.
If you're new to the idea, a good place to get some background information is Pacific Yurts at Yurts.com, an Oregon yurt-making company. Pacific Yurts doesn't offer yurt camping trips, but it has a good overview of yurt history and construction. Once you're on the home page, click on How Are Yurts Used and then Yurt Vacations for a huge list of state and private parks — including some in Mexico and points south — that offer yurt rentals.

If you're looking forward to hitting the slopes this winter, the Ski and Snowboard Expo at the convention center in downtown Albany was the place to be. It's the longest running consumer snow show in the world. One of this year's highlights was Olympic half pipe gold medalist Ross Powers.
"Winning the gold in '02 was just amazing. It was an amazing day. My family was there. It just all worked out for me," Powers said.
Powers spent the day gearing people up to hit the slopes.
"I've talked to a bunch of kids. We ran out of posters, but more are coming. I've talked to a lot of kids, families. Everyone is psyched for the season," Powers said.
Man skis 1,101 days straight

Diehard skiers can often be heard proudly proclaiming 100 or 200 days on the hill a year. However, that number pales in comparison to what Copper Mountain resident Rainer Hertrich has accomplished.
Hertrich decided to see how many consecutive days he could ski in one year, which lead to two years and now more than three years later, he still hasn't stopped.
"So, it's just over three years on Halloween and now we're kicking into year four," said Hertrich.
To date Hertrich says he has skied more than 1,000 days in a row; 1,101 to be exact.
Big In Japan: Day 1

I had just returned from five long weeks on the Mack Dawg Worldwide Film Tour and was packing up my car getting ready to move from Lake Tahoe to Orange County, and get ready for some early season riding at Big Bear. As I carefully placed the last box of crap into my truck I got a call from Pierre Minhondo, director of the 2006 Mack Dawg movie People, asking me to go to Tokyo, Japan for the Japanese premier of both M.D.P. movies People and Follow Me Around. Without Hesitation I answered with a resounding, “Hell yes!†Finally after years of hearing the stories and dreaming of its wonder, it was my turn to explore the land of the Rising Sun. Japan baby, here I come!
Ski special: Off-piste with the huskies
Submitted by admin on Mon, 2006-11-06 19:12. Winter SportsThe slopes in Finnish Lapland are magical - and so are the reindeer and husky rides. Natalie Holmes and family tried them all out

If your idea of fun is to roast in a sauna and then plunge into a lake (and the air temperature is -10C), you must be either; a) mad, or b) Finnish. Being neither, I declined this treat, offered while on a family skiing holiday near Ruka in Finnish Lapland - a trip more memorable for the "bolt-ons" that this cold, cold climate can offer.
I had worried about the cold (-12C) and the dark. Being just 30 miles south of the Arctic Circle, it starts to get dark at about 1pm. But, apart from one day, when at -16C my son and I gave in and sat by an open fires at the bottom of the piste, neither was a problem. The cold is a dry cold, and the air is very still. The dark is more than compensated for by sunsets, which seem to last for hours.
adidas Winter Slopestyle

The adidas Slopestyle has become one of the big events in the freeride calendar. It's also spawned a couple of snow-based bike events in the winter, but the forthcoming adidas Winter Slopestyle will be a little different - there'll be no bicycles involved.
The riders will be the familiar stars of the freeride firmament - Darren Berrecloth, Cam McCaul, Lance McDermott, the Lacondeguy brothers, Trond Hansen, Niels Windfeldt, Niels Peter Jensen, Gaspi, Carlo Dieckmann, Joscha Forstreuter et al. But instead of bikes, they'll be riding SMXs.
A who? The North Legion SMX is a bit like a bike in that it has a seat, some bars and front and rear suspension. But it doesn't have a transmission, brakes or any wheels. Instead you get three skis. The idea is that it's easy to transfer bike skills to the snow if you're riding something a bit like a bike, and that certainly seems to be the case.
Colorado ski resort

Steamboat is a major Colorado ski resort, located 157 miles northwest of Denver. Steamboat has an airport just 22 miles away, in Hayden, the Yampa Valley Regional Airport, with non-stop flights from eight major cities. Loyal visitors like that Steamboat has less crowds, hype, and glitz than some other Colorado ski resorts.
Steamboat is actually a mountain range: 2965 acres include Mount Werner, Thunderhead Peak, Pioneer Ridge and Christie Peak; Sunshine and Storm Peaks are known for glades and light, dry "Champagne Powder". Non-skiers can take up snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, winter horse-riding, or tubing (day or night).
Winterizing the ski muscles

Snowboard and ski seasons are quickly approaching, and so are scores of sore muscles and anguished gasps for air.
But if you start now, you can train your muscles and lungs and have an easier, more enjoyable season.
"People could enjoy their snow vacations much more if they would spend a little time preparing their bodies for the demands of skiing," says Tommi Paavola, a certified strength and conditioning coach at Discover Movement in Congers, N.Y., which specializes in outdoor training.
Noting that Americans spent about $10 billion on ski vacations last season, Paavola figures that an injury- and stress-free experience should be enough of a motivator to get into shape beforehand. His free "Sharpen Your Edges" e-book at trainforskivacation.com outlines a program for winterizing ski muscles. He also offers online training through the site.
