Skateboard Park, ATV Area Considered

Councilman Tommy Keiser gave an update, during the Buena Vista City Council meeting of Oct 12, on his efforts to look into the possibility of establishing a skateboard park and finding an area that could be used for driving all-terrain vehicles.
Keiser said he's talked with a representative of a company that built a skateboard park in Staunton, and plans to have this person give a report at a future City Council meeting. He said he'd like to see a skateboard park developed where the school bus parking lot and maintenance area currently is, near the intersection of 16th Street and Magnolia Avenue, if an alternative location can be found for the school bus parking lot and maintenance area. The area he's eyeing is adjacent to the city's outdoor basketball courts.
Keiser also wants to have a committee study the idea of designating an area at Glen Maury Park for people to drive their ATVs.
City Manager Tim Dudley reported that he's looked into what other jurisdictions have done in terms of providing these kind of recreational opportunities. A number of jurisdictions have skateboard parks, but none that he's aware of have ATV driving areas. The liability for the latter is considered too great, he said.
