Fatal accident in the dunes

A Central Valley man was killed and another was injured in a head-on collision while driving their all-terrain vehicles at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area early Sunday morning.

The crash took place shortly before 2 a.m. when Justin Cantu, 24, collided with an ATV driven by Joe Ramsey Jr., 22. They are both from Hanford.

Cantu and Ramsey were treated on the scene by medics from San Luis Ambulance, Oceano Fire Department and park rangers, then they were taken to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, where Cantu was pronounced dead.

Ramsey’s condition was unavailable as of Sunday night.

Oceano fire officials said Ramsey was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident but were unsure about Cantu.

The accident is under investigation.
